#lockdownsound

We hope you and your family are safe and well in these unprecedented times. With schools and day cares closed, and the option of playdates off the table, we know it can be challenging to keep children engaged.

Therefore, our super team have been busy concocting a few ideas during this lockdown period. One involves an awesome competition!

Victoria, one of our super habilitation therapists at The Hearing House, suggests drawing with chalk and then painting over top with water for more vibrant pictures.

While we are still able to enjoy the sun, it is a great time to grab a paintbrush, chalk, a pot of water, and head outside to paint on the concrete. You can have lots of fun experimenting with drawing swirls, shapes, stripes, animals, faces, etc. This is a great chance to introduce new vocabulary and concepts.

For example, talk about making the concrete “wet,” and the water “disappearing” as the concrete “dries”. For older children, you could talk about the water “evaporating” in the sun. You can also paint shapes/stripes of various sizes and describe how they compare: “small, big, bigger, biggest” or “long, longer and longest”.

Other useful concepts are verbs such as “dipping” the paintbrush in the water, “painting” the concrete, or “flicking” the water and causing it to “splatter” on the ground. You can have a competition to see how far you can flick the water or who can draw the longest line. I’m sure your child will come up with lots of creative ways to paint with chalk and water, or just splash around in it!

Are you ready to have some fun?

The Hearing House is holding an online competition. Your child’s mission, should they choose to accept it, is to draw an image capturing their favourite sound. We would love for you to share a drawing of what your child’s favourite sound means to them. It may be the song of a Tui, waves lapping on the shore, the sharp crunch of walking on autumn leaves, a grandmother’s voice reading a story, their friend’s laughter or the gentle purring of a cat. It could be anything and we want to see it. With the events happening in the world now seems an ideal time to reconnect with nature and our senses. We would love you to be part of it. The Steps are simple.-

  • Get your child to draw their favourite sound.

  • Share a picture of your child and their drawing on Facebook, and tag The Hearing House Facebook page. Dont forget to mention your child's age.

  • Use the hashtag #lockdownsound

  • We will choose a winner each Friday, who will receive an exciting prize from The Hearing House.

Remember to have fun, stay safe, and make some loud noises
